New allotment advice
« on: July 15, 2011, 10:58 »
Hi All.

I have just taken an allotment from the council. It is very overgrown so I already know I have my work cut out. I may be able to grow some salad things this year, but what is the best preparation to get the plot really ready to go next year? Any advice would be fantastic. Thanks

little and often

draw up a plan of where you'd like to be

cover over the summer, let the weeds die down

start digging for victory in the autumn

that's what i did anyways

Cut all the weeds down.
Mark off one bed and dig it over to allow you to get something in quick.
On the remaining area wait for weeds to start growing again then treat with weed-killer.
Wait 3/4 weeks for roots to die and then start digging.
When weeds start growing again treat with weed-killer again.
