spindly seedlings
« on: June 09, 2010, 12:41 »
I like to start as many plants as possible in my little plastic greenhouse and they do well until I plant them out when a lot of them seem to be too week to stand in the wind and get knocked over.I think I harden them off properly and they get plenty of light.

Am I letting they grow to big before planting out or is it something else

I often have similar problems (in my case, not enough light on the windowsills) and after reading things on here I've tried planting seedlings deeper than their original depth when potting on...a few don't like it and rot off but most are fine...

Spindly seedlings are usually because they have been grown in too warm a place, or there was not enough light.

It's really only the tender plants that need to be in the greenhouse for more than a few days, just to speed germination.

What plants are giving you the problems sion1 ?

the brassicas don't want to be in the greenhouse at all, they don't like the warmth :(

But plant them deeply and firm in well and they should be ok :)

I planted short rows of most brassicas outside but started cauli's and savoys in modules as an experiment.  The cauli's are lovely plants now hardening off for a couple of weeks
before planting out.  The savoys are weedy looking things that will probably be fed to the chickens.  I don't know what this proves except that some you win, some you lose.  I also started chard and spinach in the greenhouse.
