This is my first year growing broad beans - so am still learning, but last year I used twigs from other shrubs/trees for my peas.  Good luck!

With broad beans, it depends how exposed your growing site is. The wind can be strong enough to snap rhubarb stalks in one place on my plot where the wind whips around corner of my shed. So I've protected the base of my beans with milk cartons, and am building a similar post & string support system as DD has for his beans - just something for them to lean against when the wind blows, otherwise they'll snap off at the stems.

I just put bamboo canes at the ends of each row, plus a few more at stages along the row and put large-squared netting, ("threading" the net holes over the canes).

They find their way up and climb through the net without any need to do much more - apart from cover the lot from bugs and the like!

Takes about 5 mins max to do several rows like this.

I wish that I could unravel my netting in less than 30 minutes! :)

..........and then another 30 minutes to disentangle it from zips, shirt buttons, shrubbery and the like!!

Thanks all!  My site isn't too exposed so I'll see how the BBeans get on.

When should I pop the net up?  My peas are just breaking the soil now.
