My table top raised bed has become some kind of haven for grubs that are grey/brown in colour. I have sifted the compost and pulled out at least twenty today. I have sewn carrots and other things so I don't want to disturb them but I would imagine that they would be under those seeds too due to the rate I was finding them.

Does anyone know what they are and if they are harmful ?

Any chance of a pic or 2? Though I would guess they are leather jackets, the offspring of craneflies ( daddy longlegs ).

No pics as I put them in my main garden beds. I was going to put them on the bird table but felt a bit tight doing that. Looked them up and they do look like leather jackets.

Are they harmless to salad/veg ?

Hi Huballi, I found about 50 of those leather jackets a few years ago when I turned my rather patchy small lawn over. It was patchy cos they eat the roots of grass, weeds,veg etc to hatch if I remember rightly. if you had an influx of starlings  or blackbirds on your plot, pecking away, it's an indicator those grubs are there, I believe, they love 'em. Mash.
