When you plant a potato tuber do you get one potato or do you get several?
It sounds even more stupid than in my head! Sorry

You get many, I think it depends on variety usually about 6-10 in my experince. Don't worry it doesn't sound at all stupid, because when you plant one onion 'set' you still only get one bigger onion from it, it's one of the things I feel is a bit of a swizz in gardening!! LOL

Yeah - plant one bulb, and they send up lots of sprouts (unlike one from an onion set) - as if by magic, a sort of rosette of baby onions appears in the soil!  I don't know at what point the set splits into many, but I had 6-10 off each one last year.

My son said to me the other day what's the point of onion sets cause you only get 1 onion back why not just eat the set and save yourself the bother of planting ? Kids !

The other good thing about growing shallots is that they keep really well and cost a fortune to buy from the shops.

I am a big fan of shallots but do feel duty-bound to point out that it isn't just a matter of one-to-one or one-to-many.  You might only get one onion but it can easily weigh more than 10 shallots. :?  Grow most of whichever you prefer eating.
