Are my Onion Sets OK?
« on: May 27, 2009, 13:19 »
I'm new to this game, especially Onion Sets.  Could someone tell me please if these onions are OK?  I planted a row each of Stuttgarter and Sturon at the end of March and they seem to have grown plenty of green above ground, but the onion bulbs are not doing much just below ground.  A few weeks ago I cleared soil from around the top third of each bulb but the rain has washed it back. Here's some pictures:

Sorry about the grass and weeds.....that's the next job!  Hope the pics get through, but not sure I've attached them properly. If no good I'll try again.

Many thanks

Hi CanaryNige,

I'll pop your post over to Grow Your Own, but your piccies haven't come out - there's no URL between the [ img ] and [ / img ] brackets.

Have you looked at this thread to help you re the piccies?
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Spring planted sets should start to bulb up in June. Their change from leaf production to bulb production is triggered by day length.

My onions went in about same time and are at the same stage. If they begin to bulb up in June, when would they be ready for harvesting?  I have heard the foliage "laying over" is an indicator.

Your onions will probably be ready about mid August but use some before that if the kitchen needs some.

The tops will kink just above the bulb and fall over. Loosen the bulb in the soil and, after about a week, lift and put somewhere in the sun to dry. A shed roof is good or a rack made of chicken wire on bricks to keep them off the ground. Gently pull away the dried tops and skins as they dry but do not force them. After the initial drying you may want to take them into a greenhouse or covered area to finish off. Make sure that they are 100% dry before storing.

Oh dear - I took a huge chance & planted some last week! I'll have to invest in some solar powered lamps then in July to increase the "daylight"
