Just starting out.
« on: April 04, 2009, 11:39 »
I've just taken tenancy on a 5 pole allotment. It's been in use until quite recently and had a lot of manure and fertiliser on it  and it's not too overgrown, though I intend to get it rotovated this week so we can make a start over Easter. I plan to plant a few rows of potatoes first, but would appreciate any suggestions of what else to plant. Also there's a slight slope from west to east, should this affect which direction I plant?
All advice welcomed.

what to grow? there are several approaches
1. grow what you actually like and will eat
2. grow something new and different eg romanesco, squash in variety
3. grow things that are much better fresh picked eg salads, sweetcorn  & PSB
4. grow things that are high value like rasps but not maincrop spuds
5. grow different things to crop all the year round
6. grow things that look good for showing ?
Playing all the right notes but not necessarily in the right order!
