early potatos
« on: February 14, 2007, 17:45 »
I'm thinking of trying some early potatos in a bin of compost in the greenhouse.
I've bought a varity called pink fir apple, fuuny little knobly things but taste delicious in salads.
Any advice on growing please.
How many to say a bucket sized compost bin ?
Would you get them chitted first, say in the airing cuboard with some damp around them  ?
And any other ideas please.

Soon be all systems go in the lottie, nights are cutting out now.
As the great Percy Thrower used to say
" OI THINK THE ANSWER LIES IN THE SOIL"

Pink Fir Apple is a maincrop unsuited for your experiment.  Fantastic variety for a wide drill in the garden though.

Hallo slow compost - don't attempt to chit spuds in a dark warm airing cupboard - plonk them most promising end upwards into egg trays and find a cool light frost-free location for them like an unheated spare room - then they'll grow nice stumpy green shoots ready for planting.

From my experience pink fir apple are very slow to get going and you're unlikely to be able to chit them very much before it's time to plant them.  Lovely tasting spuds though.
Gardening organically on chalky, stony soil.
