Netting over my brassica bed
« on: May 06, 2008, 12:20 »
Am seriously considering getting a net up to protect my brassica bed.

Currently U have a dozen each of greyhound cabbages, brussell sprouts and white brocolli with purple sprouting and minicole coming on nicely in my seed bed at home.

I have some treated timber from an old fence as corner and middle posts about 2ft high after sinking in.

Questions:

Is netting needed now? (some neighbouring plots have but not had a chance to ask/interrogate)

Will I definitely need to net?

If so what type / gauge of netting will I need

How high will I need the netting to eventually be?

any thing else I need/should consider?
    [/list]
    Thanks in advance

If you've got pigeons like ours, yes!

The smaller the better as it will also keep out butterflies & things like whitefly. A lot of people us 'Enviromesh' to good effect.

Higher than the crop, (see the packet for a guide), otherwise the pigens sit on it, & peck through it.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

If you want to eat the produce without little hairy beasts in it or lots of nibble marks (assuming they all survive any hungry bunnies on your plot, then yes, you need to net!  I put up some 7mm net last year and the cabbage white still got through, have forked out for enviromesh this year and intend to make some kind of permanent (but movable) frame for the brassicas.  I saw a white flutterby this morning, so they are on the war path already!
