Crimson Crush
« on: March 21, 2023, 21:21 »
Advice please. I sowed my Crimson Crush seeds (all 10 of them) in one pot on 2 March and placed them on the kitchen windowsill. No sign of any seedlings yet.
The day before I sowed some Beefsteak type Crimsons Crush-type seeds (can't remember the correctname for the moment) and placed them on the same windowsill. And they all came up a week later.
Is it worth waiting any longer for the Crimson Crush seeds to sprout?

Might be worth trying some bottom heat before giving up on them completely.

Bin them, but only saying that because I grew them last year and found them tasteless- tbh could be because I bought grafted plants and I gather they aren’t generally over endowed in the taste department.

Thanks for the replies. How would I apply bottom heat?
I actually like the taste of these tomatoes.

I think germination times have gone out of the window this year...

I sowed three packets of 'Shirley' toms, and they've taken a month to germinate, which is unheard of these days, so I guess you might want to wait a while longer!

Some cheapo freebie 'Roma' from last year just romped away though!

Keep this thread going though, as the 'Shirley' were in pretty old compost which actually ponged a bit, and I got a refund , (or three new packets from our fave GC, who got the Unwins rep to refund them, so all was not lost), and to compensate, I bought a brand-new bag of peat-free compost with John Innes, with which another customer had claimed 100% germination, so we'll see what happens!

Phew...

bottom heat from an electric propagator or an airing cupboard [until they sprout] we use electric propagators in cold greenhouse this seems to work well they have a thermostat that switches off if greenhouse temp goes up i think worth the investment and they do not use loads of power to run   good luck.
from bow like to grow

Thanks for all this advice. While I am waiting for this sleepy lot of tomatoes to stir themselves, I have had another thought. I have another two packets of seeds (10 seeds in each. I wonder if I could try chitting one packet (like I do with my beans and beetroots). Put them on a damp paper towel in a plastic box and close the lid. Any thoughts on this please? (I still don't understand why the beefsteak variety are thriving and I put them in exactly the same pot and soil and placed them in exactly the same place on the kitchen windowsill!)
