has anyone out there been growing an onion called simine there a torpedo shape onion listed in Moles catalogue as long de florence simane  and in Kings as Rossa longa Firenze I think there basically the same onion I have grew simian in the past but never seem to have much luck growing them maybe I was doing something wrong so I'm going to give them another go next season if you have been growing this variety any info would be much appreciated RW

They're all just different strains of the Long Red Florence onion, RW.
I've often grown the basic LRF successfully, over the years, sowing them in early Spring, into small modules in the greenhouse.
They don't like a very wet Summer though, I must admit...

thank you for your reply Mum  can I ask do they get very big and are they a sweet tasting onion ? also I'm going to follow your advise by sowing the seed in modules in the greenhouse come spring do you pot them on into a larger pot before planting out or plant them out directly from the modules in the ground and do you feed them once planted  or prep the ground prior to plantings with say a balanced fertilizer?

In a good year, by the end of Summer, they'll grow as big as banana shallots do, but remember they aren't a long keeping onion, because of their thick necks, so I wouldn't grow too many.
I start picking/eating mine as soon as they are as big as fat salad onions, and yes I think they are mild and sweet.
All I ever used on those raised beds, was HM compost and Blood, Fish & Bone  :)
