« on: November 02, 2020, 12:39 »
Overwintering garlic i’ve been reading about planting my garlic do I have to put grit in the bottom of the hole as this becomes hard work I never really had any problems over the years I’ve had my allotment it’s clay soil but it’s been worked for the last few years but  I know it gets wet up there over the coming rain we’ve been getting lately

It’s a good idea if you have heavy soil as it keeps good drainage at the base of the garlic and prevents the root plate from rotting.

The problem I find with over wintered garlic is that if it is a really wet winter and spring rust usually devastates the crop as soon as the sun comes around. I had lovely garlic in march and dried up rusty stalks by may and not much under the soil.

My old plot ( and potentially my new garden) was very heavy clay so I plant my garlic into pots of compost for the winter and then transfer them into the ground in the spring or earlier depending on how wet it is. Works great for me and I've found I barely need to feed them in the pots even in cheap MPC.

I put mine in the ground over the weekend  :D

Gave them them a good 2 inches of mulch. Just hope for a drier winter than last year
