potato black leg again
« on: June 22, 2016, 14:57 »
Four plants removed so far  >:(

My question; is it always an infected tuber from a supplier or is it something that I might be doing wrong?

All my plants are grown in compost produced by my husband and he asked if the fact that he puts potato peelings into the compost could lead to spreading disease to my plants. Is this possible?

I think it is from the seed, and this damp weather makes it more likely.
If you compost diseased potato haulms could carry infection over, disease free ones/peelings should be ok.

However quite a few people don't use haulms or peelings in their compost, just in case.

I have it in all my Lady Christls (including an odd one that filled a space in a row of another variety) but nothing else (touch wood) and they're in adjacent rows so I'm thinking it's the seed.

Where did you get your LadyC from?

Just about to ask the same question as most of my LadyC suffered the same  :(
Mine were from TM

The thing to remember that they can't detect blackleg on seed potatoes, and the very wet weather we've had this year will have greatly exacerbated the problem.

It is annoying though, I agree.

My Lady C came from a local garden centre, can't remember which one though. So did my others (mainly Orla with a few Red Duke of York and Pentland Javelin). These are still blackleg free (touch wood) but I've just found blight on my outdoor tomatoes so am now resigned to losing a lot of potatoes one way or another... :(
