Wait! Wait until there is no chance of a frost locally.

Be prepared for blight. If you can cover them in some form of greenhouse to keep the rain off them that will help.

I've given up growing tomatoes at the allotment because they always get blight before they've had chance to ripen. Others put them in their greenhouse and succeed.

I always grow some outside.  I think it suits the determinate bush varieties more, as these tend to sprawl everywhere.  I do like the flavour of outdoor grown tomatoes.  It means you can be a bit more haphazard with the watering too compared with under cover or in a pot or growbag.

There is always the possibility of blight, but it depends on the weather.   Last year my outdoor tomatoes remained blight free, but other years have been affected.  I have taken to spraying them with Bayer Fruit and Vegetable disease control, which has been effective, whenever there is warning of blight nearby.  However, I believe this has now been removed from sale, so not sure if there is an alternative.

I would wait until the first week in June in Yorkshire before planting out and make sure they are properly hardened off so it doesn't come as too much of a shock.

This is only my third year and have grown outdoor tomatoes each year since I have had the plot as I don't have a greenhouse. Year 1 - we were drowning in tomatoes and everyone on the site was jealous that I got so many fruit from 6 plants.

Year 2 - the whole lot were wiped out in the space of a week by blight.

Year 3.... I am hoping for a repeat of beginners luck! Mine have been growing indoors for about 3 weeks. I will then spend the next week juggling them in/out of my blowaway in the balcony and then assuming the weather is ok they will have a couple of nights outside overnight in the blowaway before going to the plot in their final positions. In some ways the sooner you can get them into their final positions the more chance you have of a crop if blight does strike. However it is a balancing act against the risk of frost/being too cold

This is also only my third year :)

This time last year they were out..
Going to leave it another 10 days and see what the weather has in store.

First year no blight, last year a few plots up got blight, but I got some diathane 945 (??)
and it seemed to hold the blight off mine long enough to get a good crop.

Still have loads left, so the first sign and I'll be spraying..

We're using Bordeaux mixture at every turn, and also dissolvable aspirin, because blight isn't comfortable with these items...

Yeah yeah, the eu says nasty, but who cares what they say...

I definitely don't!

dissolvable aspirin and more under cover than out in the open last year. I managed to last longer than others on the allotment when blight did hit and had harvested the toms some that had to ripen off the plant.

Surely you take the odd aspirin for a headache, RJR?

It's a natural willow substance, and does us all the world of good!

Correct me if I'm wrong though...

We almost always end up with blight on the plot. Hence early plus second early spuds.
I don't have a greenhouse but grow outdoor tomatoes at home where blight is less likely as I don't grow any other blight sensitive drops at home. Finally I'm waiting at least another couple of weeks before putting tomatoes out here.

Good luck HH
Keep digging

I am just risking moving my plants destined for the great outdoors into the unheated greenhouse. If there is much colder weather forecast, I know I can quickly put a heater in there temporarily, otherwise I wouldn't risk it yet.

They won't see the outdoors until June, and even then I'm careful!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

What dilution do you use for the aspirin mix? Presume you spray it on the leaves rather than water it in around the toms. Does it work on potatoes as well?
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

Yes, it's one 300mg soluble tablet to 3.5 litres of water here.

Make it it a bucket and spray it everywhere on the leaves, and under them too! I think someone once said to put it in the ground as well, as the roots can use it as well!
