Just bought my seed Spuds
« on: January 17, 2008, 18:35 »
Hi have just bought some of my seed spuds from Wilkos.

Is it too early to start chitting them?
Also when I do start chitting them, how many chits do I leave on each spud and which end do I leave them on the 'sharp' end or the 'blunt' one.

I will be getting more varieties but the ones I have got so far are Early Rocket and Maincrop Desiree.
99% Organic and 1% Slug Pellets.

Allotment holder since 27th May 2007.

Check out the advice on WYGYGYGYGYGY or whatever (vegetable advice bit).  I found the advice on chitting helpful. x

Fatbelly, start chitting them now, esp the Rocket, less critical with Desiree as these are planted later anyway.  I have left my maincrop in cold and dark but i keep looking at them (once a week) and when they break dormancy i will put out to chit in the light, earlies are already out and starting to chit.  Put somewhere cold (protect from frost as will kill the chits) but light to avoid sprouts getting too long and weak.  Put the end with most 'eyes' (where the chits/sprouts emerge from pointing upwards, the 'eyes' look like small indentations in the skin, like a small cresent moon shape.

Hope that helps but check the forum for specific help on spuds, see link below.

Good price, good spud, Sparky! Get some caffeine and slug traps going by the time they are out.

They are very tasty to people, too. And unless, there is a serious draught, they produce tremendously well, hence the slug problem, but you still should get plenty.

Caffeine kills them slugs. :tongue2:
