I was watching GW and he was planting elephant garlic, but he put in the whole bulb, I thought you should brake it up in segments and plant them??? whos right, him or me, or both???

Elephant garlic isn't really garlic, it's a type of leek. I haven't grown it, but I'd suggest they'd have the planting instructions correct on GW.

When I planted mine last year, I separated the cloves.

Monty may have had bulbs that didn't clove up, if this happens you do plant the whole thing again

The cloves sometimes do not divide, producing just slightly larger single-clove (solo) bulbs. Early planting often reduces the occurrence of solo bulbs. The single-clove bulb can be harvested or planted again the following season, when it will often produce segmented cloves

Waitrose is selling a whole head for £2.50. Yes, you break the head into cloves before planting.

Having a bit of a spat with a mate who has come back from the Isle of Wight with some Elephant Garlic Cloves.
He intends to plant them and put next years crop in our very low key hortic. show next year.
I've told him that they are no more like garlic then everlasting sweet peas are to the real thing.
Does anyone have any facts to prop up my position, on Elephant Garlic and everlasting sweet peas, or should I withdraw gracefully?

Hi Fen - let him put them on the show but only in an "any other veg" category as they are not a true garlic.

Any good judge will tell the difference. Some shows exclude elephant garlic from the garlic class.

Yes I split mine, also ive had some mature into single cloves so I have replanted as whole, ive also had some good results this year on my purple garlic left 4 plants to seed and I now have loads of baby garlic seed, already in my green house on the grow and will transplant in the spring, this is a strain of garlic I bought back from france and is now in its 7th year here on my lottie I have had no issues with mildews or disease so it a very tough garlic and a very strong one to cook with packed with flavour

Elephant garlic cloves are huge and so it probably appeared that a whole head was being planted.

It does develop heads - these are about four inches across

His team of assistants probably put it ready for him and he planted it. He is a presenter, not a horticulturalist.

I noticed that on last weeks programme he dug up a bush to transplant. No struggle and it came out with a perfect root ball. Wish that happened to me.
