to water or not to water
« on: March 01, 2013, 16:22 »
OK so my seed potatoes have now all been planted out in their containers and my muscles are aching .

They have 8" of beautiful soil below and 8" above all mixed in with some yummy potato food. If I was planting them at a sensible time in mid March I would water them in but I am tempted not to with this early planting. I dont want to get them cold and wet and they cant need much water at this stage.

Has anyone any thoughts on whether this is the right thing to do? I am fully aware that it is too early to have planted them but needs must and I would rather risk failure than the certainty of a year without potatoes

You could / should have nestled the seed spuds on a thick tayer of well rotted manure.   ???

As the shoots show carefully bring the soil up round the stems but don't cover all the leaves, don't forget these are the factory of the plant using sunlight to grow spuds.

Cheers,   Tony.

I may be growing OLD, but I refuse to grow UP !

If the compost was moist I'd leave them, but if it was dry I'd be inclined to give them a quick spritz, just to settle the compost down.

They really only need water when they have leaves.
