Title: Brown Leaves
Post by: beth123 on May 10, 2011, 18:52
Hi all

All the leaves on my plants are going yellow and eventually dropping off.  At the moment it appears to be mainly affecting my tomatoes, cucumbers, courgettes and butternut squash.  Does anyone know what the problem may be?

Thanks
Beth

Where are they planted?

Could they have been scorched by the sun? (watering, condensation, rain)

Could be frost or wind damage.

Or nutrient issues.

A photo or two would help.

Hiya Yorkie

The tomatoes are in the green house and everything else is outside.  They were doing really well and I noticed the leaves wilting yesterday.  I live in South Yorkshire and we did have really, really heavy rain on Saturday night but that doesn't explain the tomatoes.  I'll nip and take a few photos now.

It is hard to see, but it looks as though there are two problems.

The tomatoes looks like a deficiency, probably of magnesium which is common with toms.  Epsom salts sprayed onto the foliage is your best bet.  Failing that, try feeding with a your run of the mill tomato food (not too much at this stage though or you will end up with masses of leaves)

The squash looks as though it is suffering from the outside conditions.  Were they hardened off before planting?  It also looks a bit small to be out in the big wide world yet.  My tender plants (cucumbers, courgettes and pumpkins) are at the 5 leaf stage and are only a week into their slow intorduction to the outside.  I find that it takes at least a fortnight to fully toughen them up, or they will sulk.

Hope this helps.

That is a big help, thanks for the advice. I've brought the butternut sqush back into the green house over night in the hope i can save them.
