Title: Any one grown scorzonera?
Post by: cc on September 30, 2022, 16:01
First year. Feeling down roots aren't up to much.
Think I read somewhere that you can leave for upto 2 years before picking. Anyone done this?
I didn't think I could grow them this year as the mice kept disturbing them  but the leaves have grown well. As stated though roots don't feel like they are going to give me much in the way of a meal.

I grew it many years ago, but harvested it in the first year.  It doesn't taste of much, but is ok with a cheese sauce or something to give it a bit of a boost flavour-wise.

The same as jaydig, I grew it as a novelty along with salsify.  I wasn't impressed but I may try and grow them again...one day.

Cheers,  Tony.

I am very happy with salsify if it didn't get multiple roots. It appears to be in one location only. I can only assume I put horse manure in there at sometime.

I've had the same problem cc and i know i didn't add manure and raised bed contains sieved soil so was disappointed by the multiple roots. Only tried salsify as had seeds and space but won't be repeating next year
