WOW! What an excellent response! Thanks so much for all the advice!

Thermos flask and some gloves will be my first purchase then!

No wheelbarrow then?

don't need them - the main hut has a few for everyone to use. I have a couple of those flexible plastic bucket things (trubs) for dragging weeds and stuff around in.

Definitely gloves, james. Most people don't handle tools right and quickly develop blisters. They're also good against itchies like nettles, raspberry canes, etc.

If you find the need, then invest in a double-wheel  barrow rather than a single. Best money I ever spent. Takes all the weight off your arms and shoulders, and they're designed to easily tip for you rather than having to shove all that weight upwards. Mind, you'll need to chain and lock up such a prize.

And when you find some leeky old hoze pipe and/or any hoola hoops ... cut them into lengths and use as cloche supports!!

I have an old piece of leftover hosepipe that I cut off pieces which I thread with wire or strong string and use the hosepipe bit against fruit tree trunks when tying them to supports. Saves any digging or rubbing by direct string or wires.

you'll be skip diving for old bits of wood etc

Oh yes! I've skip dived for pieces of wood, an old bbq stove, a net curtain, wooden planters and more.  I'm always on the lookout for anything that will come in handy on the plot. I chitted my potatoes in egg boxes

James - How's it going? Don't forget that if Freecycle don't come up with anything it's always worth posting again - new people joining all the time.

Cheers.
