If we get a warm spell they will venture out during the day, but back under glass overnight. Hope to get them out permanently by the end of the month, but very weather dependent.

« Last post by Bryan and carol on Today at 19:10 »Always sow in bog roll tubes in the greenhouse and they were planted a few weeks ago and are growing well. Doing this I believe that it's essential to plant out before the tap root shows below, so when the first leaves appear.
Back up sowing direct now showing as well.
It will be interesting to compare the two crops.

Grow Your Own / Allium Leaf Miner - Leeks and Micromesh
« Last post by Bryan and carol on Today at 19:06 »Last year our leek crop was wiped out by ALM, so we bought some micromesh to try to stop the blighters.
I've raised the seedlings in the greenhouse and the first batch are ready to plant out. Our mesh is in place.
Question is, should I wait until later in the season to avoid the first flight of the flies ? I have read different times for the 1st attack period, some say March and April, others into May.
Alternatively, a bloke on our site only raises his mesh to plant or weed when it is raining, to hopefully avoid attack. Is there any merit in this?
