Albion strawberries
« on: July 13, 2010, 00:08 »
Got carried away and got 12 of these runners cheap from Ken Muir. Only problem.....no bed space left!!! (Strawberry bed is full of Maras de Bois and Flamenco)
People seem to manage growing in pots. I've potted into largish ones with manure, topsoil, fbb and compost and they've grown really quickly with some flowers coming already.
I know you should remove them to strengthen the crowns but they are good plants and I'd like to see what I've bought!!! They are perpetual.
Can I leave them in the pots permanently? (Or at least until next year when I shall probably pinch ANOTHER bit of the flower garden......)

No problem leaving them in the pots, as long as they are big enough.

  Robbo.
If at first you don't succeed, maybe failures your thing.
Don't take life so seriously, it isn't permanent.

I'm not really a strawberry fan but had a rush of blood to the head and bought a single potted Albion plant from Ludlow market last September.

I am now a strawberry fan (albeit not a very bloated one!)

Plant is now producing runners so I think I will have to find room for a strawberry bed for next year!

I know this doesn't really answer your question Vietta but I just had to praise this great-tasting variety!  :)

Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

I'm really glad it's a good variety. Not that impressed with Flamenco....biggish but not that flavoursome, but the Maras are lovely....taste of wild strawbs but a bigger mouthful!!
Pots are 6+" diameter but 9+" deep so the roots should be ok this year. I'll pot on or plant out next year.
Just dying to taste one......
