red mite
« on: May 14, 2011, 21:49 »
Well I've got them, so far i have moved all chucks into tempary accomodation and i have stripped the coop to just the shell where i will spray clean and spray clean again in the hope of erradicating them failing all that i will just torch the thing and start again... although can you line your existing coop in polythene sheeting or will this be too hot as i
know mites dont like plastic . The perches will still have to be wood which i would coat in vasline and the nest boxes i would adapt plastic buckets  would really appricate anyones views on my idea.  thanks

fully ling with plastic is a bad idea - they need ventilation.
It isn't that redmite doesn't like plastic it's just that plastic are easier to clean with no hiding places for mites during the day. There is also no grain for them to crawl into.
Treat with poultry shield or ficam w, do not wash them out on the ground they stand on as the washed out redmite will simply crawl back into the coop  :(
Staffies are softer than you think.

I was told by an old chicken keeper that simple flea spray is all you need but i will look for some red mite powder and clean with vortex or should i use something else??

Once you have redmite it is very difficult to get rid of them.  You can type red mite into the search box in the top right hand corner and find lots of info.
Good Luck and keep us posted

Hello, I had Red Mite for the first time last summer and used a product called Total Mite Kill made by Nettex to scrub out the hut.  I use it on a regular basis on vulnerable places such as doors.  Fingers crossed no further problems.  Good luck.

Take a piece of white paper and slide it in the joints and cracks in your hen house.  If you see red staining you have redmite.  You don't see it on the hens.  :)
