Help to identify....
« on: November 16, 2015, 21:43 »
Hi everyone, I wonder if you can help me identify this Perennial plant that grows to around 30-40 cm in height, alongside running water under shade of deciduous trees. Flowers are tiny and insignificant yellowy green colour. leaves are very fresh green in spring and flowers early summer, leaves darken to mid green as the season progresses.

Many thanks for looking.

I'm assuming there's no scent when you rub the leaves?
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

The leaves look similar to the mint or lemon balm family to me but your description of the flowers isn't quite right for those. As Yorkie asked, do the leaves have a scent?

No scent and really quite a 'grassy taste'. My whippets have been nibbling on the fresh tips and leaves for years and it seems to be particularly attractive if they are feeling a bit crook!

Thanks for the replies - will have to see if I can get some better pictures and description next year as it is beginning to die down now.

I did wonder if it was ground elder, but the leaf formation looks quite different to the pictures I have seen online.

Yes I thought that but the flowers threw me too

Me too   I was all ready to post, then read the description of the flowers and that stopped me in my tracks.

Mint and lemon balm are both natural remedies for digestive upsets, so if this plant is somehow related, those whippets have obviously realised what is good for them  :)

Will try and some pictures of the flowers next year as well as a bit more scale/context.

There is another plant that my whippets love too, especially fresh new growth in spring. Have managed to find out that it is Goosegrass also called Cleavers (Galium aparine) - was wondering if it would be possible to cultivate it so my girls have their own supply so have been trying to buy seed but don't seem to be able to find any in the UK. Any advise on this welcome!

Lol, bet it is the first time you heard anyone wanting to grow an invasive weed for their dogs 'salad' leaves :tongue2:

Thanks everyone for your replies.

Funny how things can just dot into your mind during the night. Is it Herb Paris?
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.
