Title: Exhibition Veg Show 2011
Post by: Jamie Butterworth on February 13, 2011, 22:52
Brand new!

This year there will be a veg show,  this post is really just to let you know whats coming, it will be just like your local show only virtual, and we can keep each other updated on how everything is going and any stories to tell along the way :D The list of rules for the show can be found below :D

It will consist of several categories which will be decided and announced at a later date, they will be very typical to any local show, so you know what to expect. We want as many people to enter as possible and its the taking part that counts, just take a picture of your veg and enter it into the show, there is nothing to lose :)

Heres a list of rules for the virtual shows:

1) You must have at least 50 genuine posts,
2) You may enter one picture into each competition
3) After the competition closes voting will open for one week only, everyone will get the opportunity to vote for one entry.
4) The winner will be chosen by the entry which has the most votes when voting closes.
5) Sorry, but strictly no professionals or show growers for each class, however, if you only professionally grow for a few classes, feel free to enter any of the other classes.
6) Strictly no edited photos to be entered.
7) Finally, remember its a bit of fun, good luck!

I'd just like to say thanks to the moderators for allowing this :D :D :D :D :D

I would like to enter this but rule 5 says I am not allowed. :(

Why exclude show growers from a veg show? I think you should maybe drop the rule and get people to join in.

What I would say is that you can't photoshop your pictures :D

I like the idea of this and hope it takes off.

It's only a bit of fun Ian.  As a non show grower I wouldn't want to enter anything if I knew I would be up against the experts.  Much like our photo competition is not open to professional photographers.

As Ice says.  It's just a bit of fun for us amateur veg growers, so rule 5 will stay.  There are no prizes.  Just big grins

I would agree that no "photo adjustments" should be allowed.  Perhaps you'd like to add that rule Jamie :)

I'm sure there could be classes that you could enter that are not potatoes Iain or do you grow other veg to show too ?

I'll add no 'photo adjustments' as a rule :) Well spotted Ian :D

Sorry Ian but like Ice and Aunt Sally say, its a bit of fun for us amateur growers, sorry mate, but there will be plenty of classes for you to enter other than potatoes :)

How are we defining show growers? Does that mean that if I enter my local village show I cannot enter?

You can enter :D

Its just we dont want professional show growers entering as it wouldnt be fair on everyone else :)

We want it to be like a local show :)

If you show in a category in a local show you can't show in the same ones here.

It's just meant to be a bit of fun for our members who don't normally go in for showing.

If you read the post by Aunt Sally (which is the one just above your post) it explains what is meant by show grower  :)

Right then, heres the list of categories, if anyone has anyone they think should be added just let me know :)

- Tray of 3 carrots,
- Tray of 5 potatoes,
- Tray of 9 runner or french bean pods
- Tray of 3 onions,
- Tray of 5 best veg,
- Tray of 9 pea pods with one open,
- Tray of 5 tomatoes.
- Tray of mixed Veg (Any Veg allowed)

How do these sound to everyone? :)

(edit to remove open pod bit from the bean pod tray)

I enter a lot of classes in my local village show. Part for a bit of fun, part to support the show. Sometimes I win but mostly I don't.

If this cuts me and many others like me out of the competition then this forum will be the losers.

There are plenty go to a show and say "I have some at home that would have beaten them"

Or do they?

It appears to me that something started by Jamie as a bit of fun for non show growers on here is starting to get out of hand and causing a little friction. Maybe Auntie would allow a competition along the same lines for people who do show and let one of you show growers organise it.

One more query, as I was looking at this yesterday.

How do you show runner & french beans with one pod open? I don't think that neither done nor feasible without making a right mess of the bean!

You don't show runner or french beans with one pod open I think that was just a little overenthusiasm crossed with a typo.

If, when you have a set of 5 potatoes ready, or any of the other veg on the list for that matter, take a picture because everyones veg will all be ready at differant times, so some time in september we will open up the veg show and everyone can enter the photos they took.

Weve probably missed the chance for first earlies, but please take pictures of your second earlies and main crop spuds :D

I need some help with showing onions, should you bend the tops over before you tie the raffia round the stems, and how I've read somewhere about 'tightening the skins' what's this?
Title: Re: Exhibition Veg Show 2011
Post by: yorky on July 28, 2011, 21:35
Not everyone bends the tops over. You can tie with raffia then cut off the top level with the raffia.
Not sure what you mean about tightening the skins. it could be something to do with the practice of dusting the bulbs with talcum powder when you are drying them off. many exhibitors reckon this results in a better skin.

Can we have a class for best tray of home grown veg with personality Jamie

I'd love to enter but I don't very often grow perfect looking show veg.  Maybe we could do ugly but tasty - I have some lovely beeksteak toms and peppers on the way but they are all individuals if you know what I mean  ;)  :D

Another question as it has been at least 35 years since I went to a veg show!
Do the veggies on a plate have to be the same variety or can they be a mix, for example for the tomatoes, can I put red and onions on the same tray, or different colours of tomatoes.
Thanks.

Love the idea Jamie!
Title: Re: Exhibition Veg Show 2011
Post by: Sue33 on August 10, 2011, 15:20

they should all be the same variety i.e. tomatoes = all sungold / potatoes = all cara

Good Luck  :)

Trouble is, my veg are definitely the home made variety, all different shapes and sizes, so all end up in our tummy without a mugshot first.

However, although there is not a class for my tray of fruit and veg, I will post it to try to get others to post better pictures which can be included!!!!!!

This time, here are 3 Turbo onions from my allotment plot.  I grew them from sets.  They are from a 'reduced bag' in Wilkinsons for 35 pence.  I think I have enough to last me until spring, so I am very pleased with them.

I don't have any rafia to tie round the top, so have gone for kitchen string instead.  Hope this will be OK.

My final entry is for 5 Stupice large cherry tomatoes, grown from seed and potted on outside in the garden.

They are on a side plate, to give an idea of size.

I ought to have been able to enter the French bean and runner bean classes, but either ate or froze the proceeds before noticing the competition.  Still, it's great fun.
