Espalier Apple Trees
« on: August 29, 2011, 06:46 »
I am growing a couple of espalier apple trees which will grow their last tier of branches next year. The trees will be four tiers high with branches extending just short of 2 metres on either side as per below. Does anyone know how many apples should be left to grow on each branch and also when to remove any surplus blossom / small fruit? For info the breed of trees are ones called Fiesta and Sunrise.

Is this any use?
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Yorkie, yes thanks that gives good advice. Although its recommended to remove all the blossom for the first 3 - 4 years I decided to leave a few apples on this year and they are huge which got me thinking how many fruit to leave on in the future.

Generally it is best to leave enough space so the apples/clusters will not touch each other when full size, and take out any small, mishapen fruit.

Like you, I would have a few to start with, especially if the tree is well fed and - even more important - well watered.
