what has eaten my peas?
« on: May 16, 2012, 08:31 »
I feel a bit silly, but can anyone tell what has been munching on my peas?

They've not been out in the garden for long, but seemed to get eaten all in one day! I have some more coming along to go out soon.

Could do with a closer view, but I would suspect birds, probably pigeons, if it's the tips that's gone.

The pea sticks don't give a lot of predator protection.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Un-netted, and at perfect pigeon height - I'd be very surprised if it was anything else.
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

I kept meantin to put some protection around them (there isn't a smilie with a dunses cap on!!)

Do you think they are doomed or will they recover?  I have found out some plastic fencing to put on and around them this morning just in case they are recoverable!

In addition it was quite wet on the lawn and I was walking around this morning and I've got wet boots and socks, :( didn't have time to change so I've taken them off  under my desk at work - not sure what I'll do when I actually have to leave my office!

They should be fine once they are pigeon proofed  :)

Funnily enough some of mine look like that  ::)  this morning and they're under a fine netting cage  >:(

I've put down more slug pellets, cos I can't think what else it could be

I will have to hold my breath and see what happens.

I don't really like using slug pellets with all the wildlife around...

Could be pea/bean weevil. Netted mine all over. Should recover.

I know the photo's not close up, but I don't see the characteristic rounded nibbling around the edges of the leaf for pea & bean weevil.

Netting would not keep them at bay, they are very small and you'd need a fine mesh or fleece.

Same problem here - After losing my first sowings of carrots, beetroots, some broad beans and noticing something has started on the peas which are surrounded by wire mesh put pellets down around everything a few days ago. There have been LOTS of casualties since

I googled a picture of what pea weevil  and the damage it can do, but the leaves don't look nibbled in that way!

I didn't see any snail/slug trails, but doesn't mean it isn't them...

Will be dark by the time I get home this evening, so I will look again in the morning.

As I said, I don't think it's weevil. They would not do damage like this, which is also very high up for slugs.  Sorry for the quality, taken from near top right of the original.
