Egg eating
« on: June 16, 2008, 10:09 »
I am enduring an outbreak of egg eating and would like to know why this is happening and what, if anything, can be done to stop it.   The hens have good, low nest boxes, a large run, and shouldn't be too bored!  Can anyone help please?

Hi mumbogill, welcome to the forums !

Have any of the hens been laying soft shelled of shelless eggs.  This can be the cause and hardening up the shells by addition of more calcium and a little vit D into the diet can fix the problem.

How old are your hens ?

A long time (about 18 months) ago, one of the hens did lay soft shelled eggs and they did sometimes get eaten.  However, we don't have that problem any more as she now lays proper eggs, but sometimes does go broody (I think she is a "Daisybelle"!)  I have 3 hens which are 3 years old and about 2 months ago I got 4 rescue hens.  I have seen my oldies eating eggs, but don't know who started it.  Thanks for replying.
