i got this small book today for 50 pence in the red cross shop its an oldish book but not ancient and its realy good list loads of apple types ive never heard of like tydemans early, egremont russett and all the recipies have a picture of the person who submitid it and a little story of how the recipie came about , ilove these little books i also have a one for suet which was put out at Christmas and has games , recipies , mottos , anyone else got any like this

I remember Tydemans early Worcester being a variety my Dad loved to get hold of when he could and Russet... we never prefixed them with Egremont, a lovely apple.

the recipies dont say which type of apple used just cooking apples , but the recipies are nice like apple and lemon curd and apple marmalade used in war time where oranges were scarce .
apple doughnuts, apples in goo and so on there is sweet and savoury

apple orange preserve

1 lb savile oranges, 3 pts water ,1 1/2 lbs cooking apples  ,4 oz preserved ginger chopped ,4 lb granulated sugar .


cut oranges in half sqeeze juice into big bowl,tie pips in some muslin , chop the flesh , slice the peel and put in the bowl with the pips juice and water , cover and leave over night ,

 peel chop the apples and put into your pan with the contence of the bowl , simmer till peel is tender about 1 1/2 hours add the ginger and sugar o the pan,
stir over a low heat till sugar is desolved , them bring to a boil and boil rapid till setting point is reached  test in the usual way place in warm jars .



it says under a very economical jam to make with the apples taking up alot of the bulk .
im trying some i t says to freeze the oranges till its time to harvest the apples .

That just made me shudder, in a good way.

Just the thought of the small (baby) tree you planted now being there as a grown tree.

I did the same some 14 years ago at my old house with three trees, Apple cherry and pear.

I might go see what they're like.
