Can anyone recomend a pink plant or flower?
« on: January 16, 2011, 20:08 »
Hi,
just been trying to sort out the mud puddle that is the path to the greenhouse, i've dug it over and got three large stepping stones, but theres a fair bit of space between, i'd like to grow something low growing and pink (got a pink themed garden) between the stepping stones, something easy to step over... any ideas anyone?

cheers...

try Astilibe = loves water, 18" high max, nice shiny foliage, flower spikes look like pink smoke on a stick, comes back every year, keep it wet and it will thrive with minimal TLC.

If it is always on the damp side, incorporate a lot of grit before planting any alpines between the stones.

There is a pink flowered thyme - low growing and fragrant but can't remember the variety name. Rock cress also has pink flowers if you find the right one but can't tolerate too much walking on. I use pink creeping phlox for walking areas and they take a lot of abuse from feet.

I was going to suggest pink thyme.  I like to mix a variety of low-growing herb seeds with sand and sprinkle them over the paved areas in the garden, then sweep them into the gaps with a broom.  Whatever grows up gets to live there.

Last time I did this, thyme sprung up between all the bricks and it is now flowering (it's summer here).  Looks lovely and releases the most wonderful fragrance when trodden on.

Someone down the street has fantastic pink poppies growing.  I thought they looked like california poppies but my mother in law suggested they might be alaskan.  Anyway they are a low-growing, feathery looking plant and look just gorgeous with their delicate, papery flowers.

Not answering the question I'm afraid but that does take me back many years to when I took "A" level Botany as a bit of an afterthought.

Hadn't done much work for it so had to resort to making up examples of certain types of plants in the hope that whoever marked my efforts wasn't too diligent.  "Mexican poppy" was one of my entirely fictitious efforts, although it turns out there actually is such a plant!

(I did pass, by the way, but only just!)

Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!
