Glut of radishes - what to do?
« on: September 09, 2011, 15:56 »
Just lifted a load of radishes that have grown rather large (some are carrot size!).

Anybody got any ideas what we can do with them (already considered the compost heap thanks). Are there any recipes for radish soup and if so what's it like and will it freeze?

The only radish recipes on this site are for salads:
http://www.allotment-garden.org/recipe/category/vegetable-recipes/radish/

Some ideas from bbc food:

I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Anyhting that suits turnips is also Ok for big radishes, as long as they are not too woody  :nowink:

I pickled some radish one year.   ???

Believe me you wouldn't want to be in the same room as a newly opened jar of pickled radish.

My OH can be very coarse sometimes and said they were like eating pickled f**ts. :D

I laughed so much I nearly choked on my coffee reading that Spana   What a picture

Apart from making Korean radish kimchee (an aquired taste methinks) I can't think how else you would preserve radish, but seems pickling is not a good idea  ;)   Can't believe your OH was brave enough to taste one if they smelled that bad on opening

I know they're not quite the same, but I've pickled mooli (Japanese radish) layered in a jar with sliced beetroot and some slices of red onion, and it was delicious - the crispness of the mooli made a lovely contrast to the texture of the beetroot, and I can imagine the hotter, pepperier flavour of the radish would cut through the 'earthiness' of the beetroot nicely too.
