squash - is it ripe?

i've got a crown prince squash plant, and one of the squashes seems to have reached full size, but how can you tell if it is ripe to be picked?

Hard, light grey skin, dryish stalk.

and they sound hollow when you knock on them

the Crown Princes are greeny yellowish when unripe but pale blue grey when ready

mine are exactly like that.. the foliage is just starting to die off.. am collecting from allotment when this current dry spell is about to break
