Title: Onions from seed?
Post by: stompy on February 15, 2017, 10:53
Hi all just a quick one,

Is it too late to grow onions from seed, i'd be looking at sowing them at the weekend, Sunday probably.

Also, how/when do you transplant them?

I've only ever grown from sets!

No its not too late to sow.  I have some early ones I sowed on boxing day, but I have others still in the packets for sowing either later this month, or next month.

I use a small seed tray to start them inside, then transplant to small modules once they get big enough to handle.  Then its a case of cool, but frost free and bright conditions to grow them on until the risk of frost is past.  Mine have gone out into the plot in late May before now.

Don't be put off by how feeble they look as seedlings.   They grow for much longer than sets and usually do better in the end  :)
