Where Do I Get POL Pullets
« on: April 18, 2009, 19:21 »
I'm new to chicken keeping. That new that I dont even have any yet. I've converted my shed, and put a run on it.

I thought it would just be a matter of once the coup is ready, phone someone to get POL pullets and Bob's your uncle. But I've e-mailed the poultry suppliers in my area I could find on the internet, only 1 has returned my e-mail to say they didnt have any and didnt even elaborate to say when they would. The rest havnt bothered replying at all. I've bought farmers weekly thinking I'd get adverts in there, none.

So my question is where do I get POL pullets in central Scotland?

And how do I pronounce 'pullet', is it as it is written, or is there a silent 't'?

If you click on the Poultry Pages link at the top there is a link to poultry suppliers by county/country - a few in Scotland so may be some joy there.

Thanks Aunt Sally, that's what I thought, it's just that some better educated person I work with told me it was 'pulley' as it was a french word, and as in the chicken dish. Just shows you that university doesnt teach you everything.

Well things are looking up!

My other half phoned a couple today and got chatting to a women who was really nice, and gave us advice about painting the inside of our shed (as we've converted our shed into a coup) to seal all the nooks and crevices that pests might live in.

I've also had a reply to an e-mail from Deanbank.

PROGRESS!!!   :)

The only problem with painting the inside of the shed Parson, is that chickens will peck at anything!  Make sure it is chicken friendly paint!

We paint ours with creosote, nothing lives in there!  But we keep all doors and vents open for 2 weeks with no chickens in to make sure all noxious fumes have gone, and to be on the safeside, my Brian lined the bottom half with hardboard to make sure the chickens didn't peck any of the creosote off.
