I have recently been given 10 raspberry canes and have never grown them before. I am in the process of clearing my allotment which I took over in Jan after 3 years of it not being worked. It was in a dreadful state. I am keeping to my schedule of clearing areas in time for planting but clearing an area for raspberries was not part of the plan for this year. Could I grow them in 40 litre potatoe planter bags filled with soil? This would also help hold down the black fabric I plan to use for the top third of my allotment that I will not manage to clear this year. Or would they not do well in these bags?

They'd make a good start this year in the bags but I wouldn't recommend they stay any longer as most will send out runner roots which will quickly circle inside the bags and eventually choke out the plants. When you do plant out next year, try to keep as much of the soil intact as you can and the plants will start off running.
