Grow Your Own / Gone-to-seed leeks still edible
« Last post by AlaninCarlisle on May 19, 2024, 12:37 »
For reasons I won't bore you with, my entire crop of leeks (planted June last year) have gone to seed. The stems still seem solid enough so are they likely to cook and taste the same?

Grow Your Own / Potato Failure..
« Last post by AndyRVTR on May 19, 2024, 12:35 »
I sowed my maincrop potatoes in one of the raised beds on 30th March, varieties were Mozart, Maris Piper and King Edward. All the seeds were chitted and planted using exactly the same method, however, the Maris Piper & Mozart have totally failed to grow, I mean not even broken the surface! The King Edward were my own saved seeds from last year and they are absolutely thriving, unfortunately, after digging a few of the others out, the chits are the same size as when they were planted. The MP & M were bought from the supermarket, but saying that, I bought MP from the same supermarket last year and they grew ok?

Grow Your Own / Re: Slugs (again)

Hi Nobby.
This works-I`ve tried it in the past over the winter months. Slugs hide there from the cold. You will find that the satisfying method will gradually reduce the numbers `till there era none. Let us know the numbers - interesting.

General Gardening / Re: Hard pruning a rose in Summer

I wouldn't prune it to below first leaves right after flowering - I'd do it in stages, remove a couple of feet then, and then the rest once it has lost all its leaves in winter

I've had some success with kebab skewers from underneath.  Make sure the soil is moist, it helps unglue them

Sunny but not hot, so a very pleasant day for sitting out or just musing around the garden.
