About a metre square seems about right to most of us on here, but obviously the more  the merrier  space not chooks

Hi Greenmiranda

I was a bit concerned about space too - (also the owner of a small garden).  Although the general consensus seems to be 1 metre square of outside space, the hens need only about 1 foot square of inside space.  Best to err on the side of caution when constructing your 'Cluckingham Palace', but if they have a communal garden to run around in for most of the day I'm sure they'll be more than happy - even if the plants in the garden get trashed....

Best to speak to Aunt Sally - she has one of those eglu things, which seem to be v posh accomodation and highy suitable for the small garden

...but a little bit pricey.  :?

If you go for the smallest bantams you can get away with a relatively small area but the smaller it is, the more frequently you'd have to clean it out and let them have a run round.
How much permanent space could you allow ?

It certainly is

One square metre of fun space is a minimum.  That's what mine have in their Eglu run, but whenever I am at home I let them out of their run so that they can range around most of the garden - It's a small garden though
