Christmas break too long?
« on: December 27, 2021, 13:40 »
Thank the Lord for a dog that wants a run three or four times a day. It already feels like a month since Friday last week and there's another eight days to go before life starts to return to some sort of (Covid) normality.

I was just mentally reminiscing about when I worked in the glass industry. We worked right through Christmas and Boxing Day and took days in lieu later. New Year's Day was not a holiday at all, we just worked through our collective hang-overs. Even when I ran my own business, I just took Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Years Day off

My husband worked in the NHS so no guarantee he would be about.  The office I worked in closed from Christmas Eve till the New Year.

New Year's Day never used to be a bank holiday, so the break was just Christmas and Boxing day   This year it all seems to be running into a bit of a mess, but bit sure if it's my imagination or covid or old age!

I take it you don't enjoy the Christmas break? It takes all sorts  :D
Nobody in my family, or friends, are off work for more than the statutory days off. So they're back to work for the 3 days between those this year, as I think are the majority. Leaving aside those who are supposed to be 'working from home'  ::)
The thing about the glass and steel industries (there must be others) is it costs a lot to stop and start the furnaces, and it just isn't worth it just for a day or 2. With the price of fuel this winter a longer holiday shut-down makes perfect sense, though. Whether people enjoy it or not, is a different matter....

Well "the interlude" has allowed me to type up and file this year's invoices for allotment rents ready to go out on 2nd January as well as to roll over the allotment tenant's list ready for 2022. I know which plots (2) need new tenants in January and who are next on the list. And have had a survey done of one neglected "to be repaired" plot along with keeping an eye on a plot that will be free in February.

How dare anyone appreciate a decent time off work to spend with loved ones. Don't they know the whole point of life is to work work work work work so someone else can make huge profits whilst they get three fifths of breadcrumbs? Spending time with family and enjoying leisure activities is pure laziness, get back on the treeadmill now.

Not everyone has that luxury. If you're not religious, have no family, everything is shut down or closed and it's foul and dark outside then an extended break isn't as enjoyable as you might think.

Having worked in education, social services, NHS, sometimes Christmas & New Year was a given- education, but the other 2 not so. My husband was self employed for years so his time off varied depending what sort of year he’d had & what we could afford. Now we are both retired all days merge into one anyway. I suppose really it all depends on your frame of mind, how much you enjoy Christmas or not, who you are with or not with. In your case Alan, this year must be difficult for you & so I’m sure it seems to be long as I suppose it must be the same for all those others that have lost special people this year or spent vast quantities of time in isolation or out of the  normal routines.  Hopefully we will get a lid on this pandemic next year and we can all get on with being our usual cheerful or not selves

When I was gainfully employed, I always worked for the three days between Christmas and New Year, because the building industry was closed (on the sites anyway), and as Business Development Dir, I'd sit with my MD for ages and we'd go through plans for the coming year, check out new diaries, poke around on new contacts, clock the potential sites for our clients etc., all without the blasted phone ringing and having to drive everywhere! Oh, and then we'd pop off to the pub to continue the discussion with all the others in our firm.

We got so much done then, we were all good friends, none of this 'better than thou' hierarchy in our firm, we had so much going for us if we got it right from January 1st!

And all that meant that I could spend three more days with my family when it mattered, which was during the Summer holidays!

FIL is 81 and he used to cover for us while we had a weeks holiday in the summer but he can't manage any more so we haven't had a holiday for three years.  He has voluntered to cover Wednesday, Thursday and Friday as we had set 9- 12 as our hours.  We can't go out as we know we know we are going to get all sorts of phone calls about 'how do I do', 'where do I find'.  But, we are very grateful just for the rest.  Goodness knows how I'm going to cope with Paul under my feet for 10 days.  :D

I work in retail and really appreciate having time off over the festive period , it’s a good chance to re charge the batteries before a ( hopefully ) busy start to the new season . We cannot have any time off March to June
as it’s our busiest time , so a nice break now is just what the doctor ordered ! .  :)
( any guesses as to where l work ?  ::)

Lardman, I totally agree with you.   It is lonely and not fun.  When folk rattle on about how wonderful it all is, they should maybe stop for a few seconds and imagine the boot on the other foot.   Mrs Bouquet

when I worked at a brewery on the transport we had very few deliveries to make after Christmas then it all changed over the years some of the supermarket warehouses and cash and carry outlets wanted deliveries boxing day when I was shop steward we negotiated treble time for any deliveries made within the holiday period and as deliveries where few and far between after the Christmas rush any deliveries where on a rota basis so any driver that had worked last year wouldn't be expected to work this year if you follow me

some people had to work over Christmas in the brewery [brew house] because brewing didn't stop only production and that to was on a rota so basically everyone had some time of within the Christmas period

these days we are  invited  to spend Christmas a few days away with my daughter because we don't see them very much over the past year because of there commitments but its always nice to get back home my wife likes to spend the new year at home just the two of us unless someone pops in for a new years tipple

I personally think Christmas these days has become to commercialised there there  doesn't seem to be the spirit or sparkle of Christmas as there used to be in my younger days maybe its me  getting to be an old codger and it was never heard of going abroad for Christmas in those days it was all about spending time with your family if I remember

you see I always think get Christmas over with and the start of a new year my thoughts are looking at the new gardening year getting  itchy feet to get cracking on the allotment or in the greenhouse doing something to brush of those winter blues  :D

They should all be working while I enjoy smug retirement. (Tongue firmly in cheek!)!
