I have grown some lilies for cutting this year, and the first one is almost ready to cut, buds just about to open. My question is, as there is only one stem on the plant, if i cut this how will the bulb regenerate itself for next year?

The bulb has no problem regenerating as the biggest draw of energy and food is now gone and remaining nutrients will return to the bulb. It's pretty much like deadheading, except flowering heads are removed.

You just need to make sure that you leave enough of the stem with leaves, to enable the bulb to carry on making food to rebuild again for the following season, and give them a good feed to help them on their way
