... what's the best variety to grow to get a few decent size bakers?  And will that variety allow me to dig some earlier so I don't get inundated (ever the optimist!!) with jacket spuds???

Kerr's Pink (if you like floury tatties).  Huge foliage.

How big did your picassos get Agapanthus? Were they big enough for substantial jackets?  Mine were delicious but on the small side.  having said that I did grow them in a horrible soil, so this might account for it, was just wondering if they normally get bigger than I managed!

I have very poor soil in one veg bed too, Vicky R. It's the next bed in my rotation line so I'm currently dumping all the organic matter I can lay hands on into it. At the moment, the local towns are allowing leaves to be bagged for collection (and sadly, dumping) so I drive around and stuff my estate wagon with all the bags I can. Then make return trips. When rotovated, the leaves get chopped small and add lovely tilth. I'm also building the bed up later with slats to help productivity. You could always try growing them in cut off barrels, large tubs, etc.

There's a bit push on to get children to eat jacket potatoes.  Better for them than chrisps

I've never grown for jackets, but the British Potato Council recommends:

Estima
Marfona
Vivaldi

Ace!

Jackets all the way this year.  One of my allotment neighbours has the biggest spuds you've ever seen.  No innuendo intended!  Think they were Marfona. ,,

Some were massive and the others were massive as well.
