I knew it was too good to be true
« on: October 18, 2011, 13:15 »
I posted a while back about introducing Roxy to my existing 3 hens and how well it had gone but I was waiting for trouble.

Well at the weekend I found it.   I had just taken some lovely pictures of the 4 of them all resting in the sunshine together thinking what a lovely flock they made but a shame that only one of them was laying really regularly just now.

Anyway after their sunbathe they all went off for another wander and a scratch and a dig around as chickens do - next thing we know Ginger lets out a squalk and there's Roxy on her back doing very unlady like things to her - so our Roxy is indeed a Cockerel and now has to go back to the breeder for a swap with one of his sisters and we...

have to start the introductions all over agian :)

Ah well ...chicken keeping at its best!

this doesn't mean she is a he, you will find the top hens do this as a way of making their point that they are the top hen. So don't be in a rush to get rid of Roxy.
Staffies are softer than you think.

Let's see some photos of Roxy!  We can all have our best guess as to whether he/she is Rocky or Roxanne.

I think we are fairly sure it's Rocky. We had our doubts when we first bought her/him  just we've never had a crow

I think the neck feathers have really got very much fluffier recently too

the second picture shows him dust bathing with his chosen favourite girl

The tail feathers look very boyish to me. What breed is he?

I agree with JAK.  I also think the upright stance and thick legs are more boyish.

He's a mixed breed.  Father is a Cream Leghorn mix and all I know about Mum is that she lays blue eggs.

They are all going to the 'chicken holiday home' tomorrow for the weekend and that's where we got him from so he will stay with them when we collect the others on Monday and we will hopefully bring one of his sisters home with us.

Our new Roxy has come home with the girls.  She had already been introduced to them so we put them all in to bed together last night.

All seemed well today, an odd peck here and there and she's a little cautious but so far so good.

Hopefully we'll get some nice eggs once she's settled in

Glad Roxy MK2 is settling in well. Will she be a blue egg layer too?
