Blueberry Recommendation
« on: August 06, 2011, 19:05 »
Never grown before and would like to get some in this year.

Anyone any recommendations? Believe you need a couple of varieties to get best results.

Any advice appreciated or suppliers

We have sunshine blue (of course  ;) ) and top hat at the plot -- both are short ones and early. Average size berries

At home we have bluecrop in pots. These get bigger 1.5m to 2m roughly and are fruiting now. Big berries with a lush taste.

All have really good autumn leaf colour and need little in the way of care, other than ericaceous compost (I give them azalea food) and plenty of water  :D :D

The bluecrops are three years old and we get about a double handful per bush now. Increases every year and my daughter gets about a kilo per bush from her 5yr old plants.

I think one of mine is North Country, and it's turned into a monster plant after 2 years. I expect serious cropping off that one because I'll be caging it in as birds love blueberries too.

the older the plant gets, the more it will crop.

I've got Earlyblue and Bluecrop in there second year and Early blue was loaded with fruit this year, had about a pound so far and probably another pound left. Blue crop less prolific, but it is more shaded.

My best one is Darrow. It is laden with huge yummy berries  :tongue2:
Earliblue has also been very good.

I brought 2 Bluecrop from Kitchen Garden mag. They have really good promotions now and again.

They were free with just p&p to pay.

Remember to water with rain water only.
Top tip for camping....don't go.
