Re-using compost??
« on: January 19, 2022, 18:02 »
I always grow quite a lot of aubergines, tomatoes, peppers and melons in 2 unheated ricketty old greenhouses on my allotments. I'm just gearing up to sow the seeds in the south-facing conservatory at home. For years I grew them in grobags on shelves - a back problem prevents me growing them at ground level. For the last 2 or 3 years I've changed to growing them in various large containers filled with shop-bought cheapest multi-purpose compost. It all worked very well last year....
Now I'm wondering about re-using last year's compost, pepped-up with liquid feed. As I'm reluctant, perhaps unable, to pay lots of money for all-new compost. I'd be grateful for advice as to whether this is a practical notion....?  What problems and failings might there be?   eg  pests? inadequate nutrition? anything else?

Or  -  am I just too much of a cheapskate for this game...?

Adding some multi-purpose fertiliser makes the compost reusable - but the accepted wisdom, is not to reuse it to grow the same family.
aubergines, tomatoes, peppers
are all the same family. So you could grow the melons in those pots and vice versa.
I'm guessing that you have more of the tomato family compost though  :(
