things they used to say
« on: January 19, 2021, 10:42 »
we where talking the other day about gardening as you do well that's all most of us can do till spring so it came up in the conversation about what the old gardeners  used to say

it was always said round here when you go to the allotments you should carry a penknife a shilling and a piece of string well I lost my knife somewhere don't carry cash and haven't got any string in my pocket

so what do gardeners carry to the allotments these days a flask a bacon butty and a few sweets ?

Mobile phone, flask and bag with hand tools.  There is an emergency £10 in the car.

String is always around the shed, but the shilling stays at home...

But, when we took over the big allotment around ten years ago, while sorting out the weeds, grass etc, I kicked at something which I thought was a stone but picking it up, found that it was a gorgeous, old-fashioned bone-handled pruning knife, a bit dirty, as sharp as a razor, but an established make, so easily cleaned up to look like new!

It's now in the shed somewhere...
