Title: Protecting fruits and vegetable from mice?
Post by: DanielCoffey on July 02, 2022, 14:10
I would appreciate some advice on how to protect apples and squash from mice when stored on shelves in an unheated garage. We are rural with a high mice population and the garage is easily acessible for the little blighters!

I assume some sort of mesh cage will be needed for storage?

In addition am I correct that onions are largely safe from mice due to their odour/taste?

I use the heavy duty plastic (folding) food crates that supermarkets use, remembering to put an empty crate on top and that the handles/holes for lifting are not accessible.  I don't know if mice can chew through them but I've not had it happen.

My understanding is that alliums are toxic to many animals, including mice.  Keep them away from dogs!

The catch will be making sure the vegetables are ventilated but that the holes are smaller than a pencil so the mice can't get through.
