Title: Cukes? Anyone sowing soon?
Post by: adri123 on March 18, 2014, 00:04
I know I can get carried away with the enthusiasm so just wondering if any PT owners out there have started off cukes.

With the propagator and growbox combo I have it'd be easy to start some off but I don't want to check the growth by putting them into the PT if the temps aren't high enough....

Tricky business knowing just WHEN is the best time...

I have some indoors, BUT they will be going into a heated greenhouse. I would not start ones destined for an unheated PT yet.

i've done a couple of mine, have just come through. will be doing some more over weekend.

i will be doing some back ups in a few weeks in case i'm premature in putting them out and loose them.

i have a feeling we might get an early summer this year, i'm also in one of the warmer part of the country so any people in colder parts will prob be a few weeks behind me.

I've sown nine indoors, and after the standard death rate, expect to get about half into the greenhouse when it's warm enough.

Then another will die off and we really only want three or four, so that should do the trick..;0)

Its one thing I have actually managed not to sow yet ..... Not as in forgotten, but purposely left as last year I started them too early and they had fruit on them by the time I put them into their final planting place in the unheated greenhouse. I'm thinking of starting them off in a couple of weeks time. Hope it's not too late then.

My packets are firmly sealed for the next four weeks at least.

I agree LilacSandy - it is still far to early to start off cukes. They germinate and grow so fast that waiting a few weeks will not make any difference and it will ensure that the plants are not set back by a cold spell.  :)

Just germinated mine in a heated propagator.  The will stay in there for quite a while and then into the greenhouse  with lemonade bottles over them to keep them coszy.

The are Passandra and will be grown in the greenhouse.

Im always horribly late sowing them and by the time they fruit the season is drawing to a close.  I'll be sowing in succession each fortnight. I put the first seeds in this afternoon, this years lemmings are Iznik, Diva , Carmen and miniature white.

Starting April Fool's day I'll go for the successional sowing too.  Don't want to be too early or too late so that way at least one or two pairs of cukes should do well.

First true leaves opening ,but I do have a heated house . However next year will be a month later as I find they do better in PT than under glass.
