Hen has spots on wattles......is it ok?
« on: October 24, 2009, 09:31 »
Morning all,

The other day I noticed one of my hens had spots on the one wattle....I thought it was splashed mud or something. Anyway, they were still there yesterday, so I picked her up for a closer inspection...much to her disgust!!
It's weird, they are not scabs or splashes of anything....they are just there like markings??? She also has a couple on her crest too. Is is anything to be worried about?? They look like little lumps of fat???

Thanks all

I really hope this isn't the answer, came across it whilst looking for something else!

http://www.poultryhelp.com/blackspots.html

Does say further down the article that some forms start with white spots

PS.  Its a US site - I don't know if Fowl pox is present in the UK - someone will!

Thanks for that. Have looked into it further.....quite worrying  :(

However, she's not depressed, her appetite is as good as ever and she is laying daily.....so fingers crossed it's not that.

I think sometimes if we are not careful we can panic over every little thing - (having given you that link raising possibilites of dread disease ::) ::)!) if she is happy in herself its probably far more likely to be something benign - teenage spots maybe???

One of my hens has had a purple comb from practically day one - theoretically signs of heart disease and/or frost bite - she has been consistently my best layer for the last 2 years!

All the best
Janet

Ha ha!! Thanks Janet!

I've just been to inspect her closely again now......she has a few more!! Some of the initial ones are black and quite scabby!!

Anyhow - I've swiftly moved her to her own quarters!!! She'll be staying in there til it's gone!! None of the others are showing signs of it at the moment so fingers crossed!! I do have 4 young ones out there too!!

I'm thinking this may turn into a conveyor belt excercise!!! Thankfully they all moved into a large shed recently and I had still kept their original little house, so she's in there now!!

Many thanks for the link!!
