They will take slightly longer to emerge.

If you miss a few during harvest and leave them in the ground you'll soon see plants popping up.

If you ask 100 gardeners you will get some who say that they always chit ,and some that say that they never do.

I think, after over 40 years of growing spuds that its best to chit earlies and mids, but according to the telly gardeners you get a better grop if you dont chit lates, so I dont bother to chit them.

I have read so many books that refer to chitting and none seem to agree, but if you have the time chit them it will certainly do no harm ,and in fact may do some good.  PP is right they should all catch up anyway.  So welcome and wishing you a great crop.

I'd agree with Henry.

I've only ever had enough space to grow first and second earlies, and have always chitted them.  I think it is important to chit them in cool and very light conditions so that the sprouting chits are encouraged to be strong and dark.  If they are leggy they may not do so well.

If I had space for main crop I'd not bother to chit them but I would plant them with their rose end up.

Mine have gone a little bit soft...does this mean that they are ruined or is this normal?  I've never done anything other than cook potatoes before so I don't know what to expect!

Hi
If they are long and white (2 inch ish), just like you find when you get your spuds out of the cupboard for Sunday lunch and find that they have sprouted, then the risk is that these will break off when planting. You can remove the shoots now and they will re-grow in a couple of weeks.

Some seed potatoes do go soft and wrinkly they will be fine to plant.

Just checked and almost all of my pot/seeds are soft and a bit wrinkly,  it happens every year, so dont worry when you ready plant them as normal, they will be ok.

I chit all my spuds regardless if they are earlies or main.
I used to work in a helium gas factory, but I walked out, no one talks to me like that.
