Title: Spring Planting of Garlic
Post by: argonaut on April 12, 2024, 14:07
I am going to be planting a few varieties of Spring Garlic
See different methods to do this.
Some books says to bury so tip is 2" below ground
others say plant with tip protruding (like Onion sets)

Which is the best approach ?

I plant in the autumn but I normally aim for the tip to be just below the surface.
Suggest you see what different responses you get as I wouldn’t count myself as a particular expert. Good luck HH

I always plant mine about 1" below the surface and not protruding at all.
I wouldn't have thought that spring planted garlic would be different to autumn bulbs.

It's quite late to do so, I'd just plant it just below the surface. I doubt the country will see any hard frosts from now. You might just get some garlic scallions or small bulbs you can eat as green garlic, either way worth a try as you can't really buy them from the stores

Spring planted garlic usually means early February, so there's still enough time for vernalisation. If you try again next year plant them deeper in february, or try ones that do well from an autumn planting. Germidor is a good reliable softneck for that
