Tomato trusses becoming new shoots - what's going on?!
« on: September 19, 2011, 17:39 »
This year, my Gardener's Delight tomatoes have been acting a bit strange - some of the tomato trusses carried on growing into new 'sideshoots' at the end of the truss.

I've been growing them for 5 years now and never had this happen before - any idea what might be the cause?  I had lower yields this year as well...

I'm stumped  ???

Hi there and welcome to the site  :D

Was it fresh seed?  Sometimes something can mutate in the seeds or the plants.  However, it's been a funny year all round so it might just be something in the weather which has confused the plant.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

It often happens.

What's more of a surprise is that you've not seen it before!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I always get a couple go like that. Quite often on a long truss, but not always. Snip it off as you would a sideshoot and will be fine.

Wow - I didn't realise it was a common occurrence!

I must have just been lucky up to now.  I'll be more vigilant next year and cut them off earlier.

Thanks for that!

I didn't realise either as I have never seen it, although perhaps I just don't look enough.  Bit like a four leaf clover, if you look they are not hard to spot!

I've been growing tomatoes for quite a few years and this is the first year I've ever seen it. I think it has been a funny year for tomatoes - mine have been behaving most oddly  ???

wandering off slightly, yesterday I noticed a tomato seedling growing in the greenhouse, and I did wonder whether I could get it through the winter as a houseplant ready for next year...

then thought s*d it and put it in the compost. I can live from November until January without tomato plants :)
